Where did this week go?

Hey folks,

It's been a busy week. Kat had her birthday on Wednesday and we celebrated with dinner at Jaleo, then a visit to see the gang at Fantom Comics. Wackiness didn't precisely ensue but we did have fun hanging out with everyone. We also agreed that we'll be seeing Speed Racer this Sunday. Based on the reviews, I think I'd better bring dramamine if not Pepto-Bismol.

Still getting ready for the trip to England. Can't wait!


Other than that, I've been reading Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville novels. Kitty is a werewolf who hosts a nationally syndicated radio show discussing the supernatural. So far I've read the first two books; though werewolves aren't normally my favorite supernatural critter (and I've gotten pretty tired of vampires, sinceI'm discussing this), she makes Kitty and her supporting characters really come alive. I'll be keeping with this series as long as she's writing them.


Also on deck: Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson #4) by Rick Riordan. I've always loved Greek mythology; Riordan has a great knack for weaving ancient myths seamlessly into an ongoing tale of a boy who's Poseidon's son. Definitely one to follow, if you like urban fantasy YA (and who doesn't?).


I might have a Bugles Planet post coming up soon. Oh, and my review of Iron Man over at SFRevu? The folks at Marvel Comics took a peek at it and liked it a lot. Very very glad to hear that!

Reviving BPD

Hey folks,

A lot of you know that I am a co-founder and frequent contributor to Bugles Planet Daily, a humorous blog aimed at comic books and fandom generally. The site had languished through Fall 2007 and into the new year, partly because our core group of contributors weren't, um, contributing and partly because those of us running the show had other commitments (including our own writing).


Well, I've gotten back in harness on BPD, so if you haven't read it lately, check it out. I have up new posts on the Skrulls' take on Secret Invasion, a note on the passing of Dave Stevens (the creator of The Rocketeer), and a bit about Booster Gold and Blue Beetle reuniting with an old friend. There's more in the works--including a big group interview on the TV show AMERICAN HERO and an interview with blogging superstar/ace Jonathan Hive.

Been Awhile!

Hey folks, been awhile since I last posted, but I've been busy.
First up, I'm working on a ton of reviews (already) for March's SFRevu. We had an editorial conference on Sunday and figured out a bunch of upcoming stuff, much of which involves yours truly. Got a lot of legwork to do this next week.
Not only that but:
1- the kittens are getting spayed tomorrow;
2- our condo is getting sprayed tomorrow (taking advantage of the kittens' absence to do a thorough bug-bombing);
3- we have our Virginia primary tomorrow;
4- I'm going to coordinate a big interview in BPD and SFRevu to support the new Wild Cards website from Tor and comic from Dabel Bros.;
5- probably have "shockwave" therapy for a kidney stone (one that is doing some internal harm) on Wednesday;
6- gotta try to set up an interview with Ray Bradbury this month;
7- I get to sleep sometime around Thursday.

As you can see, a lot going on.

Hey folks, I know it's only Tuesday but there'll be a brand new "Ask the Question" column on BPD this Monday. It's definitely-- different-- but I hope you'll give it a look.

Marc Guggenheim: The Man, the Myth, the Legend

Kat and I had the pleasure of interviewing Marc Guggenheim (affectionately known in our circle of comic fans as "The Goog") for BPD a couple of months ago (said interview went live on the site Monday). Terrific guy with an extremely diverse writing career-- I'm nearly as jealous of him as I am of Seth Green.

Anyway, check out the interview. Kat took lead on this and did a great job; she's got a knack for interviewing. We talk Resurrection, his new creator-owned series from Oni Press, as well as his stints on Blade, Wolverine and The Flash; we also touch on his upcoming series Eli Stone.

We're wishing Marc all the best; Hollywood writers are dealing with a strike over unfair compensatory practices and he's in the middle of it all. But he's a good guy and we know he'll be okay.

SEEING REDD Attacks BPD!

To feature Kat's interview with author/producer Frank Beddor, we've launched SEEING REDD WEEK at BPD. It's a pretty dramatic thing for us, but it's a lot of fun and we have some very offbeat posts coming. Give it a look!

Some new stuff (finally!)

Hey everyone,
It's been a crazy few weeks. Two weeks ago, as of my birthday-week, I/we have:

• gone to a Weird Al Yankovic concert (the guy rocks!!),
• attended a WSFA meeting,
• took a trip to New Jersey for my sister's 40th birthday,
• interviewed for a job at NIJ (that I didn't get--big deal).

And Kat took a trip to NYC that involved:

• an early morning jog from our condo to Van Dorn Metro (it's about a mile away)
• nightmare difficulties getting home on Sunday (she ended up traveling 7.5 hours, I was traveling for about four)

All in all, it's been a rough couple weeks.

And I know I owe you pictures of the kittens. We do have some real neat ones but are still stuck on the names. Janet and Chrissy may well end up being their names, who knows.

What's Goin' On?

Hey everyone,
It's been a great week in many ways. The Bugle's Planet Daily blog launched last week and has been doing very well-- I've got tons of posts in our inventory, which means readers will be eyeballing my stuff for the next few weeks unless our contributors start cranking.

Saw "Knocked Up" with Kat yesterday, then wandered the streets of Old Town Alexandria, mostly thinking about having kids and being a parent. It's in the cards, just a matter of when, not if. The movie's good but goes to places that left me thinking "okay, a little TOO far..." Worth seeing but not necessarily owning, if you know what I mean.

Kat and I are going to visit my mom in Gulfport in a couple of weeks, which will be terrific. Last time I was there was just after Katrina and it was heartbreaking-- imagine your old hometown torn to pieces and a lot of your familiar childhood touchstones gone. Supposedly there's rebuilding going on but it'll never be like it was. But Kat will get to see the place and Mom's very excited. Should be a great visit.

Kat's also going to Philly this week to spend her brother's 21st birthday with him and her cousins. Those wacky kids. I know they'll have a fun time together. Meanwhile, I'll be at home writing.
